Jumper JP1 on the VBUS signal allows students access to 5V when needed and allows them to measure the current draw by measuring the voltage drop across the 2.2Ω current sense resistor. The computer USB connects to a FT-230X which serves as both serial communication (via EUSART1) and the 3.3V supply for the board. The USB connection plays a role in our story. We always configure the RE3 as an external master clear, never an input. Just short out the pads and the PIC resets. I use the solder jumper on MCLR as a cheap "button" for emergency resets. There are no devices on the PGC, PGD and MCLR. The PK3 programming header is located on the right side of the schematic. Its a tough little chip, able to withstand the horrors inflicted upon it by undergraduate students surface mount soldering for the first time.

Been using that processor for about 6 years. This latest incarnation is based on the PIC18F26K22. I've had students in my Embedded Systems class building developments board for the past 10 years.
